We asked the GHI queens (and kings) of clean for their housework must-haves!
Most of us clean because we have to, not because we love it, so it’s worth investing in the best cleaning tools that’ll make light work of the housework. However, it’s easy to fall for marketing hype and buy products that end up not being up to the job. So how do you avoid wasting money on products that’ll end up lingering at the back of the cupboard gathering dust?
The GHI testing team have first-hand experience trying all sorts of cleaning products and this crack team of experts spend their days testing the claims on new wonder products and appliances, sharing their expert cleaning hacks, busting myths and finding brilliant shortcuts. Here are six of their Tried & Tested top gadgets and gizmos to help make your home sparkle!
An essential in the average GHI testers' cleaning kit, these cloths can be used with just water to clean a range of hard surfaces, which means you can do away with harsh chemical cleaners for many household tasks.
They really come into their own on reflective surfaces, such as windows and stainless steel, where they help achieve a streak-free finish in a jiffy. For sparkling windows and glass, buy the specially designed window and glass cloths.
If you’re going to use them throughout the house, you might want to have different colour cloths for different rooms to avoid transferring germs as you clean. After use, pop them inside a GuppyFriend bag before washing them at the highest temperature on the care label. The GuppyFriend bag catches the microfibres that are released from synthetic fabrics during the wash cycle so they don’t end up in the ocean.
A handheld vacuum cleaner is really useful for quick spot-cleans like getting rid of crumbs and dust. But a handheld vac without any real power is worse than none at all.
Although our winner, the Dyson V7 Trigger (90/100), isn't cheap, it’s certainly up to the job. It has a run time of up to 30 minutes and has two power modes, as well as a great selection of tools making it a versatile little vacuum for all sorts of vacuuming tasks around the home.
GHI Tip: Car need cleaning? Don't pay for it! This vacuum did a top job cleaning a car interior in our tests.
Cleaning the windows is no one's favourite chore as it takes a lot of elbow grease.
If you have large areas of glass to clean, such as a conservatory or patio doors, it’s worth considering a window vacuum, to save you the energy. Trust us, once you've splashed out on this little gadget, you won't look back — they get the job done quickly and are far less messy than a squeegee dripping water all over the floor!
They’re also great for removing condensation in older homes with single glazing. There are a few to choose from but we rate the Bosch Glass VAC (90/100) – it’s great for glossy results in record time!
Cleaning the oven is the chore we all love to hate, so you probably want to get it over and done with quickly.
Ideally, we should wipe it down after every use and use an oven liner to make cleaning easier. But if yours is well beyond just elbow grease, a good oven cleaner is a must and will save you heaps of time.
Oven Mate performs consistently well in GHI tests. It's great at removing burnt-on food from the inside of ovens, grill trays and racks. It's also quick and easy to direct the gel onto the soiled areas of your oven, even those hard-to-reach corners and we love that it doesn’t have a harsh smell like some other oven cleaners!
A reliable mop that won’t spread dirt around or get clogged quickly is essential.
We've tested a fair few mops in our time so we know our stuff. Our top-scoring traditional mop, the Leifheit Clean Twist Disc Mop, performed well across even sensitive wooden floors and was effortless to use thanks to its spin technology. It also comes with a wheeled bucket to make the cleaning even easier.
Our most recent product review has all kinds of mops, from sponge to spray, at a range of prices.
We can't understate the importance of having a really efficient vacuum cleaner with consistently good suction power - this will save you a huge amount of time and energy.
Our top scoring cylinder vacuum, the Sebo Airbelt E3 Premium, was great at picking up dust on short and long carpets as well as laminate flooring. The testing team described it as a great all-rounder, and noted that the ET-1 Power Head picked up pet hair in just two sweeps.
If you'd prefer something cordless, this Hoover Cordless Vacuum achieved perfect scores in nearly all of our pick-up tests and can run for up to 40 minutes before it needs recharging.
